AWARE. EDUCATE. ADVOCATE. ACT NOW! World AMR Awareness Week 2024

November 18-24, 2024

Antimicrobial resistance threatens our aquatic ecosystems and food safety. As World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW) 2024 approaches, MPEDA calls on all stakeholders in the aquaculture sector to unite against this silent but growing threat to our oceans, marine life, and seafood industry.

Understanding AMR in Aquaculture

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) occurs when microbes acquire drug resistance and no longer respond to treatments, making infections tougher to cure. In aquaculture settings, this phenomenon poses unique challenges:

  • Resistant bacteria can develop in fish and shrimp populations
  • AMR pathogens can spread through water systems to wild aquatic species
  • Resistance genes can transfer to human pathogens through the food chain
  • Seafood safety and ecosystem health become compromised

Why AMR in Aquaculture Matters

AMR is a rising threat to safe seafood and sustainable aquaculture practices. By abolishing indiscriminate antibiotic use and adopting good management practices, we can ensure a safe future for our communities and environment.

The consequences of inaction are severe:

  • Rejection of seafood exports due to antibiotic residues
  • Economic losses for farmers and exporters
  • Degradation of aquatic ecosystems
  • Contribution to the global AMR crisis affecting human health

Use Antibiotics Wisely, Protect Our Waters

In aquaculture, antibiotics are sometimes necessary to treat diseases, but their overuse fuels AMR, harming marine life and compromising seafood safety. MPEDA encourages responsible practices through:

  1. Better Management Practices (BMPs) that focus on prevention rather than treatment
  2. Pre-Harvest Testing to ensure seafood is free from antibiotic residues
  3. Training Programs for farmers on proper antibiotic use and alternatives
  4. National Residue Control Plan (NRCP) implementation to monitor and control residues

Every Small Action Counts!

From sustainable farming practices to monitoring and regulating water quality, together we can combat AMR and protect our marine ecosystems. Start now for a resilient future:

  • Implement biosecurity measures to prevent disease outbreaks
  • Use probiotics and immunostimulants as alternatives to antibiotics
  • Maintain proper stocking densities to reduce stress and disease susceptibility
  • Keep accurate records of all inputs used in aquaculture operations
  • Participate in farmer clusters and societies that promote responsible practices

Learn, Support, and Make a Difference

This week’s theme reminds us to raise awareness, support safe practices, and make smart choices for a world free of drug-resistant pathogens. Let’s work together for a healthier tomorrow!

MPEDA is conducting several initiatives during WAAW 2024:

  • Training programs for farmers on BMPs and alternatives to antibiotics
  • Awareness workshops for hatchery operators and feed manufacturers
  • Collaboration with research institutions on developing antibiotic alternatives
  • Distribution of educational materials on responsible antimicrobial use

Together Against AMR! Now or Never!!

As World AMR Awareness Week approaches, our commitment towards a healthy world must continue beyond these seven days. Let’s keep learning, advocating, and taking action to ensure proper usage and disposal measures in our daily lives to ensure a healthier environment and safe food for generations to come.

Join us in this critical mission to safeguard our aquatic resources. Follow MPEDA’s social media channels for updates on WAAW 2024 activities and learn how you can contribute to combating AMR in aquaculture.
