Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA) received Patent for Mud Crab Seed Production Technology

Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aquaculture (RGCA) – The Research & Development Arm of MPEDA received Patent for Mud Crab Seed Production Technology.

RGCA, the R&D arm of MPEDA, established India’s first large-scale Mud crab (Scylla serratta) hatchery at Thoduvai, Tamil Nadu in 2004, with an initial production capacity of 1 million per annum. Dr. Emilio T. Quinitio, Scientist, Aquaculture Department, SEAFDEC has rendered consultancy services for the establishment of the hatchery.

In 2020, its capacity was increased to 1.4 million/annum. So far, 7.28 million crab instars were produced and supplied from this hatchery to 659 farmers.

MPEDA- RGCA filed for a patent for the Mud crab hatchery technology with the Government of India in 2011. After several round of reviews, RGCA has received the patent for the crab seed production technology.
